Nigerian chess advocate Tunde Onakoya has become the first Nigerian to be appointed Global Ambassador for WR Chess, marking a significant milestone for the country’s growing presence in the international chess community.
Onakoya announced the development on his social media platforms, expressing pride and gratitude for the opportunity to represent both Nigeria and Africa on a global stage.
As Global Ambassador, Onakoya is expected to promote chess development across multiple continents, including Africa, Asia and Latin America. He revealed that the role will involve international tours and participation in major chess events, including a world record attempt scheduled to take place in Peru in June. According to him, the broader goal is to expand access to chess, inspire young talents and strengthen the game’s global community through strategic partnerships and grassroots initiatives.
Onakoya also acknowledged the support of WR Chess leadership, reporting that the organisation’s chief executive has consistently backed chess development efforts within the African community over the past four years. He disclosed plans to collaborate closely with the organisation to advance a shared vision for chess growth and long-term impact.
