Nigerian football legend Sunday Oliseh has given his personal assessment of why the Super Eagles failed to win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, despite being one of the tournament's favorites. Oliseh, a former national team captain and coach, said Nigeria’s early promise and strong individual performances were undermined by internal issues that affected unity, focus, and team balance.

Speaking on his channel, Oliseh explained the exact causes behind the Super Eagles’ inability to lift the African Cup of Nations trophy. “We are confusing talent with license. Victor Osimhen is world-class. But talent is not a license to destroy team chemistry. When you publicly diminish your teammates, you break their spirit,” he stated. Oliseh stressed that football at the highest level is built on mutual respect and trust, adding that negative public comments within a team can weaken morale and affect overall performance during crucial stages of a tournament.

The former Super Eagles coach specifically blamed Victor Osimhen’s previous harsh attitude toward Atalanta winger Ademola Lookman, following a clash between the two players during the Mozambique match before the semi-final. “Lookman was the most dangerous player in the tournament until that public verbal abuse broke his focus,” Oliseh noted. He further warned that scoring goals for Nigeria does not give any player the right to disrespect teammates, coaches, or past legends of the game. “It doesn’t give you a license to disrespect certified legends like Finidi George or Victor Ikpeba. It doesn’t give you the right to disrespect coaches or teammates,” Oliseh cautioned, urging professionalism and unity in the future.
