Nigerian and Super Eagles defender Bright Osayi-Samuel has revealed the reason behind his decision to commit his international future to Nigeria and the personal consequences that followed.
Speaking to OmaSportsTV, the full-back, who previously played for Birmingham City, revealed that playing football outside Nigeria made many players feel superior because of the exposure and structure in Europe. “But when it comes to playing football, some people might think playing for England is better, but you don’t experience the other side of it,” he stated. Osayi-Samuel explained that the glamour attached to European national teams often hides the emotional connection and pride that comes with representing one’s true roots, something many players only understand later in their careers.
According to Bright Osayi-Samuel, his parents played a major role in shaping his love for the Nigerian national team and helped him understand how Nigeria works beyond football. “With my dad and mum exposing me to Nigerian culture, attending Nigerian weddings, enjoying the food and everything — playing in England means you start to play with players who represent their own countries, and you start to understand the importance of playing for England,” he added. He concluded that these experiences ultimately helped him appreciate the honor and responsibility of representing Nigeria on the international stage.
