| Senegalese Head Coach Pape Thiaw |
Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw has been handed a five-match ban and fined $100,000 by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) following disciplinary breaches during the Africa Cup of Nations final against Morocco.
The decision was confirmed on Thursday after CAF reviewed incidents that occurred during the tense decider played in Rabat on January 18. Senegal went on to win the match 1-0 in extra time, securing the continental title despite the controversy that overshadowed the closing stages.
In an official statement, CAF ruled that Thiaw was guilty of “unsporting conduct” and “bringing the game into disrepute.” The governing body highlighted his behavior during stoppage time in normal play, when Morocco was awarded a late penalty. The audience showed the Senegal coach making gestures toward his players from the touchline, actions that were widely interpreted as encouraging them to leave the field in protest of the decision.
CAF reported that such conduct violated competition regulations and set a negative example at a major continental event. As a result, Thiaw will miss Senegal’s next five CAF-sanctioned matches.
