William Troost-Ekong, the prominent defender and captain of the Super Eagles, is reportedly contemplating retirement from the Nigerian national team. Troost-Ekong represented the Netherlands at the Under-19 and Under-20 levels before committing to Nigeria's senior team. Born in the Netherlands to a Dutch mother and a Nigerian father, his initial youth career involved representing the Netherlands before his switch to the Super Eagles in 2015.

According to a report by PulseSportsNigeria, the captain disclosed his possible departure from the squad following their defeat to DR Congo. He was quoted as telling his teammates after the 4-3 penalty defeat in Rabat, Morocco, “I will watch you as a fan at the AFCON.” This statement signals a strong indication that the 32-year-old may not feature in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations tournament.

Troost-Ekong has accumulated 83 caps for the Super Eagles since his debut in 2015. Over his decade-long career with the national team, the centre-back has scored a total of 8 goals. He remains Nigeria's most-capped defender in AFCON history, having been named Player of the Tournament at the 2023 edition, where he also scored three goals.

Currently, William Troost-Ekong is 32 years old, having been born on September 1, 1993. He has held the position of Super Eagles captain since 2021. The news of his potential retirement comes after the team failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking the end of a significant era for the veteran defender.
