Retired Ghanaian football legend and the Black Stars' all-time top scorer, Asamoah Gyan, recently attended the prestigious 2025 CAF Awards ceremony held in Rabat, Morocco. Gyan, who officially retired in 2023, was a prominent figure at the event, where he shared his perspective on the future of African football. His presence at the Confederation of African Football (CAF) event underscores his continued influence and role as a CAF Ambassador, promoting the sport across the continent.
During his interview on the sidelines of the CAF Awards, Gyan offered his predictions for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament, which will be hosted by Morocco. He named Nigeria, Ivory Coast, and host nation Morocco as the three strongest contenders likely to lift the trophy. The former captain admitted his disappointment over Ghana's failure to qualify for the 2025 AFCON, but quickly shifted focus to celebrate the national team’s recent success, stating he was "very happy" that the Black Stars made amends by securing qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Gyan’s confidence in Nigeria and Ivory Coast stems from their impressive performances in the last edition. The Super Eagles of Nigeria finished as the runners-up in the 2023 AFCON, losing a closely fought final. The host nation of that tournament, the Elephants of Ivory Coast, completed an incredible comeback story to ultimately win the final with a 2-1 victory over Nigeria, securing their third continental title. Gyan believes the momentum and core squads of both teams, alongside the strength of World Cup semi-finalists Morocco, make them formidable forces in the 2025 tournament.
