Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen will miss the 2025 CAF Awards ceremony in Rabat after sustaining a hamstring injury. The key moment of his participation came in the crucial 2026 World Cup playoff final against DR Congo on Sunday, where the forward spearheaded the Super Eagles' attack in a bid to secure qualification.
Osimhen was visibly gutted and substituted at half-time of the decisive match. He suffered a recurring hamstring injury, forcing him off the pitch after playing the first 45 minutes. His absence significantly weakened Nigeria's attack, which ultimately fell to DR Congo in a penalty shootout.
Following the Super Eagles' elimination, Osimhen's Turkish club, Galatasaray, urgently recalled him to Istanbul for a medical check-up. An MRI scan, conducted at the club's sponsor hospital, revealed a moderate-level strain (strain and bleeding) in his left posterior muscle. Treatment has immediately commenced for the 26-year-old.
Despite the clinical diagnosis, Osimhen attempted to allay fears about his fitness upon his arrival in Turkey. When asked about the injury, the striker was direct, simply stating, "My injury is not very serious." He now faces a recovery timeline that puts his immediate club fixtures in doubt.
