Oakland Mourns: 'Last Chance U' Coach John Beam Fatally Shot on Campus

John Beam, the former "Last Chance U" football coach and Laney College Athletic Director.
The Oakland community is in shock following the tragic death of John Beam, the celebrated former football coach and athletic director at Laney College, who passed away after being shot on the campus fieldhouse grounds. Beam, 66, was an Oakland institution, recognized nationally for his compassionate yet demanding leadership in the 2020 season of Netflix's "Last Chance U."

The shooting, which occurred on a Thursday, was quickly determined by police to be a "very targeted incident." Authorities arrested 27-year-old Cedric Irving Jr. the following morning. While the motive remains under investigation, police confirmed the suspect and Beam knew each other.

Beam's legacy extends far beyond his two league titles and 90% graduation/transfer rate at Laney. He spent over 40 years mentoring thousands of young people, often giving players who faced life's greatest challenges their last chance at success, on and off the field.
