Nigerian Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has offered a heartfelt apology to the nation following the team’s devastating penalty shootout loss to DR Congo in the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup African Qualifiers playoffs. Despite Nwabali’s individual heroics, which included saving two penalties, the 4-3 defeat ended Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the World Cup.

The shot-stopper took to his official Instagram page to voice his deep disappointment, echoing the sentiments of the team and the fans. "Painful! We all did our best for the badge though our best wasn't enough," he wrote.

Acknowledging the heavy weight of the defeat, Nwabali showed his connection to the fan base, stating, "I was once a fan and understand how it feels giving you a disappointing night, we take full responsibility."

His emotional post underscores the anguish felt by the squad after failing to secure a World Cup spot. The goalkeeper’s direct apology and acceptance of full responsibility serve as a closure for the painful campaign, leaving the team to regroup after missing a second consecutive World Cup tournament.
