Ghana Member of Parliament, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has broken his silence over the tragic stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium which resulted in the death of six individuals and left several others injured, many of whom are currently receiving treatment at the 37 Military Hospital.
Sharing his emotions on his official Twitter handle, Samuel Ablakwa posted, “We ask God to console their families and grant them divine fortitude.” He powerfully asserted that, “No Ghanaian should ever lose their life for patriotically and courageously responding to a national call to be recruited into the Ghana Armed Forces.” The lawmaker emphasized the profound irony of the situation, in which citizens eager to serve and protect the nation met their end.
Reflecting on the role of the security services, Ablakwa stated, “Those who seek to wear uniforms to protect us also deserve our full protection.” He concluded this poignant section of his message with a call for collective prayer, writing, “May we all continue to pray for the souls of our young compatriots who died in the El-Wak stampede and those who remain hospitalized.”
Ablakwa stressed the critical need for institutional learning from this disaster. He noted, “We must learn lessons, reform recruitment processes as the President has assured, and pledge that never again shall this avoidable tragedy be allowed to happen,” Ablakwa sent a direct appeal to President John Mahama and the relevant authorities to implement immediate, effective reforms, ensuring that such a preventable loss of young, promising lives is not repeated.
