Ghana President John Mahama has spoken out against the illegal mining menace, popularly known as Galamsey, condemning it as a destructive force that ravages the nation's lands. He firmly stated that this environmental degradation can never be accepted as a means of survival, emphasizing the critical need to protect Ghana's natural heritage for future generations.

In a post on his Twitter handle, President Mahama articulated the gravity of the situation, stating, “The fight against illegal mining (galamsey) is not a matter of convenience; it is essential for our survival. We cannot destroy our environment while claiming to build our future.” He further commended the bravery of journalists Erastus Asare Donkor who risk their safety to expose these environmental crimes.

President Mahama also vowed that his administration would take firm legal action against individuals and communities who attack public officials performing their lawful duties to stop illegal mining.

Addressing the nation's youth, the President highlighted the creation of alternative opportunities. “To our youth, we are creating alternative opportunities, including the National Apprenticeship Programme, to provide you with sustainable jobs. Let's choose sustainable livelihoods over environmental destruction,” he stated. Reaffirming his unwavering commitment, he promised, “I assure you, as your President, that I will NEVER give up this fight against illegal mining,” offering the youth a pathway to dignified employment away from Galamsey.
